  • Alcohol is a depressant. The more you drink, the more "depressed" your brain activity becomes. As you continue to drink and alcohol levels increase, specific parts of the brain are affected more significantly.
  • A 150-pound man would have to drink approximately 18 beverage units (one unit consists of 5 oz. of wine or one and a half ounces of spirits) in about a hour in order to reach the lethal blood alcohol concentration which is approximately 0.4%.
  • Alcohol-induced cell death and inflammation can cause scarring that distorts the liver's internal structure and impairs its function. This scarring is the hallmark of cirrhosis.
  • Individuals who use both alcohol and drugs are at risk for dangerous interactions between these substances and there is an increased risk of fatal poisoning.
