- Family problems that are frequently associated with families affected by alcoholism are increased family conflict; emotional or physical violence; decreased family cohesion; decreased family organization; increased family isolation; increased family stress including work problems, illness, marital strain and financial problems; and frequent family moves.
- Scientists now believe that certain factors in a person's environment influence whether a person with a genetic risk for alcoholism ever develops the health problem. A person's risk for developing alcoholism can increase based on the person's environment, including where and how he or she lives; family, friends, and culture; peer pressure; and even how easy it is to get alcohol.
- The primary reason that women metabolize alcohol more slowly than men because there is a smaller amount of the alcohol metabolizing enzyme dehydrogenase in the stomach in women. Because less of this enzyme is present, more alcohol passes through the stomach to the duodenum, which is the main alcohol-absorbing portion of the gut.
- Older adults who began abusing alcohol earlier in life tend to have worse treatment outcomes than those who began drinking later in life.
