  • Many alcoholics choose to believe that their drinking does not hurt other people. The truth is that alcoholism creates negative effects to everyone around the person with the drinking problem, especially those people who are close to the alcoholic.
  • Because alcohol is a depressant in the body, high doses of the drug can reduce cell activity; when alcohol is removed from the cells, they recover in a way that produces a change toward stimulation. The body's attempt to produce "normalcy" often leads to over-stimulation, which is known as withdrawal ;thus, binge drinking often leads to a "hangover" (headache, increased stomach acidity, early morning awakening, etc.), and long -term heavy drinking often leads to the "shakes", delirium (hallucinations), and in some instances, seizures.
  • Drinking can negatively impact how a person performs as a parent or partner; it can also lead a person to be violent, to spend more time away from home, or to cause their loved ones to feel anxiety, fear and depression.
  • Effects of alcohol abuse and alcoholism on families can include increased domestic violence. The effects that parental alcoholism can have on children can be significantly detrimental in other ways as well. For example, the sons and daughters of alcoholics seem to be at higher risk for experiencing more negative feelings, stress, and alienation as well as aggression. There are a multitude of negative psychological effects of alcohol dependence, including depression and antisocial behaviors.
